How to Get Rid of Armpit Fat?
If you’ve noticed a small “pooch” next to your armpit, usually identified as a bulge that remains outside of a bra or swimsuit, this may be due to a common cosmetic concern known as axillary fat (or “armpit fat”). Armpit fat can often be resistant to diet and exercise, and many individuals affected by it may experience feelings of discomfort and embarrassment. Similar to other areas of the body that collect stubborn pockets of fat, the extra fatty tissue can be caused by genetics, hormones, excess weight or obesity, weight fluctuations over time, and other factors. Fortunately, there are several treatments that can help resolve this issue and work toward producing more defined contours in the armpit region.
Liposuction
As one of the most effective and popular cosmetic surgery procedures available, liposuction can eliminate fat in targeted areas to create leaner contours. This procedure creates very small incisions that are used to insert a thin tube (cannula) that will suction out excess fat cells. Liposuction offers generally quick results, and the treatment is typically performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia. Scars are often barely noticeable and, for smaller areas such as the armpit, many patients are able to return to work and other daily activities after a few days.
CoolSculpting®
For a non-surgical alternative to liposuction, CoolSculpting® can provide an option to remove armpit fat without the need for incisions or anesthesia. The CoolSculpting® treatment uses an applicator to “freeze” and break down excess fat cells, which are then filtered out of the body through the natural metabolic process over several weeks. Generally, there is no recovery time needed and patients can resume their daily life without disruption. It may take several CoolSculpting® sessions to accomplish the desired outcome, so patience is key for this treatment option.
Arm Lift
Medically referred to as a brachioplasty, an arm lift can correct symptoms of excess skin present in the upper arms up to the armpit area. Since excess fat may also be contributing to the concern, this procedure is often combined with liposuction in the armpit area to help those experiencing both extra skin and fatty tissue that may be creating the appearance of armpit fat. An arm lift is a more involved surgery with a longer incision, and it can take up to two hours or longer under local or general anesthesia to complete. However, for the right candidates, it can be a highly effective option for restoring smoother skin, more refined contours, and a more youthful revitalization with improved aesthetic balance and symmetry in both arms.
