BOTOX® Cosmetic vs. Dermal Fillers
The expressions we wear on our faces are an important part of our individuality – yet, as we age, the repetitive motions that accompany them, combined with changes in skin elasticity, can begin to alter our appearance. Fortunately, there are several non-surgical injectables and dermal fillers available for restoring a more youthful and refreshed aesthetic, often after a single office visit. Our board-certified plastic surgeon in Waldorf, Dr. Ayman R. Hakki, and his experienced aesthetics team offer many advanced options that can be customized to each patient’s unique needs and cosmetic goals in order to provide results that look both beautiful and natural.
Whether you are new to these treatments or curious about trying something different, it’s helpful to know the potential benefits and effects of these injectables, as well as some of the basic distinctions between them:
BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, which can be safely and strategically used for blocking nerve signals to prevent muscle contractions that cause wrinkles to form. When injected for aesthetic purposes, the targeted facial muscles are temporarily relaxed to reduce signs of facial wrinkles and fine lines.
- Often ideal for: crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead creases
- Average duration: three to four months
Dermal Fillers
Commonly described as a gel-like substance, dermal fillers are made from either naturally occurring or synthetic compounds that can be injected under the skin to restore volume and smooth lines or creases. They are not “neuromodulator” injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic that target muscle contractions. Many popular dermal fillers are often composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is naturally found in our skin. These include solutions in the JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® lines.
- Often ideal for: smile lines, vertical lip lines, nasolabial folds, hollow or sunken cheeks, depleted volume in lips and other facial features
- Average duration: six months to two years (depending on the particular dermal filler utilized and the patient’s unique response)
Both of these treatments are eventually metabolized and absorbed by the body, so periodic touch-ups will be necessary to maintain the results of BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers. Individual results vary and follow-up appointment recommendations can be provided by our team.
