Brow Lift (Forehead Lift)

Although enjoyed for the greatest range of emotions, the most expressive areas of the face also usually begin to show signs of aging first. For many individuals, this may be most noticeable in the eyebrow and forehead regions. Typically, signs of aging and exhaustion in these areas can be attributed to a drooping brow line, forehead lines, descended musculature, and lax forehead tissues. Fortunately for many patients, our board-certified plastic surgeon in Waldorf, Dr. Ayman R. Hakki, can improve these cosmetic concerns with a brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, for a revitalized, more youthful aesthetic with natural-looking and long-lasting results.

Quick Facts About a Brow Lift:

  • Candidates: Healthy men and women with visibly drooping eyebrows, forehead lines and creases, and excess skin hanging over the eyelids may be good candidates for this procedure.
  • Benefits: A more youthful, refreshed look in the upper face; reduced sagging in the eye areas; and diminished forehead wrinkles and eyebrow furrows are some of the major benefits associated with brow/forehead lift surgery.
  • Procedure Details: Approximately one hour for surgery (depending on the technique) utilizing IV sedation or general anesthesia is typical for this procedure. Some cases may require a longer treatment time.
  • Recovery: In general, patients should plan for about 7 to 10 days of recovery after brow lift surgery; however, this varies based on each individual’s needs and response to the procedure.
  • Cost: Brow lift surgery typically costs between $6,000 and $8,000 at our practice; however, this is a general estimate. The total price is often different among patients based on the customized treatment plan and other factors.

Am I a Candidate for Brow Lift Surgery?

As we age, repetitive facial movements and fat dispersal in the brow pad can lead to the development of cosmetic concerns that may portray a consistently “angry” or “sad” appearance. Men and women experiencing these effects might be good candidates for brow lift surgery if they are in good overall health and wish to address:

  • Sloping or descending eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead wrinkles and creases
  • Furrows between the eyebrows
  • Lax forehead tissues
  • Excess skin over the eyelids

If it is determined you are an ideal candidate for this treatment, Dr. Hakki can evaluate your facial structure and cosmetic goals to create a customized treatment plan. Depending on individual needs and treatment goals, additional procedures may also be considered for a more comprehensive result, such as eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) for sagging, puffy, or tire-looking eyes or a facelift to improve aesthetic issues in the lower areas of the face.

What Does the Brow Lift Procedure Involve?

Ultimately, a brow lift procedure should correct the structures of the eyebrows and forehead to elevate the region to a more youthful position that rejuvenates the eyes while avoiding an “overdone” appearance. To achieve a natural-looking and balanced result, Dr. Hakki will select the surgical approach that best meets the goals and facial anatomy of the individual patient.

The surgical approach can include a traditional method (coronal brow lift) with a longer incision that extends across the hairline to release tissue and musculature and reposition the brow line. Alternatively, a less invasive endoscopic technique utilizes a flexible, thin tube accompanied with a light and camera to view the muscles and soft tissues. The appropriate surgical changes can be made by creating several small incisions, typically placed in the central scalp and temples behind or at the hairline, which can result in less scarring.

In general, a brow lift is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or IV sedation, depending on the surgical approach and each patient’s unique needs.

What Can I Expect During Brow Lift Recovery?

Following brow lift surgery, it is normal to expect some degree of swelling, bruising, and discomfort or tightness near the eyelids. These symptoms can usually be well managed with oral pain medication as prescribed/recommended and by closely following all aftercare instructions provided by Dr. Hakki and our team. Most patients are able to return to work within about 7 to 10 days; however, strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks.
