Can Exercise Reduce Large Male Breasts?
This is a very common question among men who are experiencing excess tissue in the breasts that is creating an enlarged appearance. The condition is called gynecomastia, and it can be manifest in adolescence or later in life. Whether fitness regimens may be capable of improving the concern is ultimately dependent on the particular type of gynecomastia that is present and other factors relating to how an individual’s unique anatomy responds to certain exercises.
Gynecomastia is basically classified in two major categories: “true gynecomastia” and “pseudogynecomastia.” True gynecomastia indicates that the enlarged breast appearance is primarily the result of excess glandular tissue in the pectoral region, whereas pseudogynecomastia is typically characteristic of excess fat in this area. With true gynecomastia, chest exercises will likely not be effective at all since glandular tissue is more dense than fatty tissue. By contrast, some individuals who have pseudogynecomastia may see a certain degree of results over time after a regimen of chest exercises and/or other workout routines since the condition is being caused by excess fat rather than glandular tissue. With this in mind, it is important to note that, even in cases of pseudogynecomastia, exercises still may not be sufficient to address the concern with a large degree of success.
For individuals suffering from gynecomastia who are considering their options to reduce signs of enlarged breasts, there are surgical treatments available that have proven very effective for both types of the condition. Glandular extraction may be an ideal solution for men diagnosed with true gynecomastia, and liposuction may be all that’s necessary for those who have pseudogynecomastia. In some cases, a combination of both glandular extraction and liposuction may be recommended if glandular tissue and a collection of excess fat cells are contributing to the concern. These procedures can typically be performed as an outpatient and ultimately serve to recontour the pectoral areas of the chest for a flatter appearance.
